2.  The outlaw race has it's own set of rules (see below). This race is for siblings and parents who want to race. The cost is $2 per car. (ONLY the outlaw race has a buy in fee, the scouts will be able to race for free)

3.  The race will start promptly at 6:30.  Any late entries will not be allowed to race to be fair to all the boys participating.

PACK 4042 OFFICIAL PINEWOOD DERBY RULES

1. Each car entered in the race must be newly built for the current Cub Scouting year.

2. The car should be substantially built by the Cub Scout. Parental supervision and guidance in the construction of the car is encouraged, but the parent SHOULD NOT BUILD THE CAR FOR THE CUB SCOUT. Parents and siblings should show off their car building skills by entering the "Outlaw Class" races (see Outlaw Class section below).

                           WHEELS AND AXLE

a. The original wheel axles (nails) should be placed in the original slots provided in the block of wood in the Pinewood Derby kit, if possible

b.  The original tires from the Pinewood Derby kit must be used

d. Loose pieces that are designed to intentionally fall off during a race are not permitted.

e. The axles of the car must be from an official B.S.A. Pinewood Derby kit

f.  The use of a flexible or sprung suspension system of any type is prohibited.

g. All four wheels must touch the ground upon rolling, you will be asked to adjust wheel axles if they do not all touch the ground

h. Wheel treads may not be altered in any way other than removal of defects and polishing.

Please be warned:

       CHECK-IN

Cars will be inspected for length, weight, ground clearance, wheels and any illegal modifications prior to race.  If the check in crew finds any violations they have the right to disqualify the car.

                   "OUTLAW CLASS" RACE RULES

The outlaw race is for all the parents and siblings that want to race in the pinewood derby. There will be a $2.00 buy in for racing. All proceeds will go towards future pack events.

As the name states the outlaw race is just that. No Holds Bar.

There are just a few small rules that need to be followed for the safety of our track.

a. The body of the car must use the block of wood provided in an official B.S.A.  Pinewood Derby kit; you can purchase them directly through the pack for $6
b. The axles must be attached directly to the original block of wood

c. The total weight of the car may not exceed 9 ounces

d. The maximum width of the car, including wheels, may not exceed 2-3/4 inches.

e. The maximum length of the car may not exceed the original block as provided in the Pinewood Derby kit

f.  The minimum ground clearance must be at least 3/8 of an inch

g. Minimum width between wheels is 1-3/4 inches.

h. The wheels may not be metal or any other form of material that can scratch or damage  the track.

i. Body design may be enhanced by adding other stable materials such as plastic or metal.  Again, no metal or harmful materials may be touching the track directly any additions must be firmly attached and conform to size specifications.

j. Cars must be powered by gravity only! This means no engines, rubber bands, wind up motors, springs as used for propulsion, rocket motors, CO2 cartridges, thermo-nuclear reactors, plasma boosters, rodents on hamster wheels, etc.

k. No projectiles are allowed, and no part of the car may intentionally detach from the car during the race or come into contact with any other car.

Other than these few small rules, anything goes! Use exotic tools and equipment such as milling machines, lathes, laser cutters, 3D printers, or anything else you can think of to make your car.
