Pack 104 Cub Scouting Activities

For Pack 104, there are Cub Scout activities year-round, but we largely follow the school calendar. We generally recruit new Scouts as school starts in the fall. Then we work on rank advancement until spring when hopefully all our Scouts will have earned their rank. We will then present those badges just before school lets out. However, just because school is out doesn't mean there's no fun to be had. We schedule Pack-wide events throughout the summer; we just don't hold regular den meetings or work specifically on rank requirements.

In a typical month during the school year, there are two den meetings each month and one Pack meeting. Our consistent major Pack-wide activities during the school year are family campouts in the fall and spring, the Williamsburg Christmas Parade in December, our Pinewood Derby in January, and our Blue & Gold Banquet (like a birthday party for scouting) in February. Additionally, there are other activities that vary from one year to the next but have included things like a space-themed overnighter, Cub-Olympics, Raingutter Regotta, and Space Derby.

During the summer we encourage the Scouts to attend local Cub Scout Day Camp and/or a Resident Camp. Unfortunately, our Council does not have its own Summer Camp, but Pack 104 has been very happy with the Cub Adventure Camp outside of Richmond (the Heart of Virginia Council). We also have our annual Pool Party at the end of summer to get everyone excited about the new Scouting year that's about to start.

We typically do one big fundraiser each year - our fall product sale. Starting in the fall of 2017, this included both Trails End popcorn and Whitley's peanuts. This provides a significant portion of the funds needed to run the Pack. Dues are required for each Scout to cover the cost of registration with the Boy Scouts of America national organization and insurance for each Scout in the unit as well as awards like pins, patches, and belt loops. Cub Scouts who participate in this fundraiser (either via personal sales or at show-and-sells) can earn their dues. We also have started having a second (optional) fundraiser in the Spring which enables each Scout to earn a scholarship to help cover the cost of Day Camp and/or Summer Camp.

Service is also a very important part of the Cub Scout program. Pack 104 does various community service projects such as mulching the playground at the Edgehill Clubhouse, participating in the local Clean the Bay day, and Christmas Caroling with Troop 306.
